I feel like since I heard the name bayle I feel like I’m fighting him too early in my dlc run
First half of him I’m all “oh ok I can learn this an murder him with the dragon scimitar”
Then I got to the second half and I’m just getting my ass kicked around by explosions. I’ve only gotten that far 3 times and so far each time is just me healing into a other explosion until I die
Luckily the first half seems pretty trivial since great dragon scimitar punishes his up close fire breath big time. Just step back wait second and crack him
Are you using summons? First time I ran into him, had a Scadu level of 9 or so and he handed my ass in a package with a tidy bow. Got my Scadu level up to 14, grabbed my dragon katana, summoned my mimic and grabbed Igon and it was a pretty reasonable battle.

I’m a stubborn stickler for pain so no summons and I think I’m only scad level 3…
Took me like 30 minutes to get his move set down for phase 1. Phase 2 prob gunna be a lot more
I dunno why sone times he staggers easy and other times I crack his head with the dragon wound ash of war 7 times with no stagger

Oh jeez. If you're powering through the DLC at scadu level 3, you are playing a different game than I am, and you're free to ignore any advice I might offer.

I didn’t mean to, to be fair! I am exploring and trying to find those suckers I just happened to find this dragon area and I’m stubborn and don’t like to admit defeat
This dlc makes me feel very aimless. I dunno where I’m “supposed” to go. So I went up this mountain…
The dragon before bayle took me like 3-4 hours. Was a nightmare. Bayle seems potentially easier.

Absolutely get more scadu, they make a big difference.
Bayle is one of the dlc's super bosses, alongside a couple of others who were likewise tucked away after difficult areas.
You should be able to summon Igon to. Finally, if you've the stats to use it, the dragon slayer great katana you got on the way is perfect for splattering dragons. Lock on to the head and spam the weapon art

Ha, my experience was the opposite. I bumbled up Dragon Mountain, one-shotting everything I ran across, then bumped into Bayle and was severely humbled.
I will say that I kinda share your view of the DLC feeling aimless. Like, it's very clear about what major plot areas you're supposed to hit, it's just that following those signposts will get you murderated right quick since you won't have had a chance to power up at all.
And where the base game let you point yourself in a direction and go - like you could hit Caelid, Weeping Peninsula and Liurnia from the jump without trouble, and the way into Altus was pretty apparent even if you couldn't head straight there - entire regions of the DLC are only accessible by, like, jumping into a random well or something.
I spent a significant amount of time post-Rellana knowing that I wasn't ready to face the next major area, and knowing that 2/3 of the map remained to be discovered, but not having any idea how to get there.

In my experience with Bayle, when he goes to phase two and turns into a draconic AC-130, one strategy I found for avoiding the hellfire from him was to basically take a long arc around his arena and just sprint nonstop. Just hold down sprint and keep moving in a circle around the arena until the bombardment ends and he lands again. That seemed to be the only way to reliably avoid the majority of his barrages. Also I would recommend Igon if only for the voice lines haha.

His lines after killing is also mandatory, so you have to beat Bayle with him.
It's the new rule of the DLC, Bayle solo isn't allowed, its uncool now. Sorry I don't make the rules! Take it up with the gubmnt!

Haha fine I’ll summon him.
I looked at bayles stars online and it claims you can rot him but my rapier just refuses to. I can trigger poison I can freeze shd bleed but he never seems to get rot I should need like 14-15 hits. I’ll hit him like 20+ and no rot
Do certain enemies have much higher rot buildup recovery or something?
Elendil Registered User regular
August 13
the rot weapons are pretty bad at inflicting rot generally. plus they have weaker rot that does less damage
buildup degrades if you go too long without applying it, so unless you can consistently and frequently land hits it'll take even longer. better to use an incantation or hefty rot pot most of the time.

Yeah, hefty rot pots are the light and the way for proc'ing rot, but the cookbook for them is pretty deep in the DLC, so you might not have it yet.

Well I murdered bayle without ever learning how to dodge his flying fire beams which was killing me every fight
Turns out if I summon Igor and then stance break bayle and then cast rot breath while he’s down, then pop a stance break mix while he blasts off I can stance break him again pretty quick into the second phase and just murder him
Dunno how much Igor was helping but that went very quick on my first time summoning him

Hm, for my single weapon run of thrusting swords it's hard to argue with cleanrot--longest, hardest-hitting on almost any infusion, sometimes by a big margin--but I wonder which would be more fun for a power stance main gauche build:
- antspur rapier so you can take advantage of 2/3 status applications in one via the triple right-hand hit the power stance moveset has
- or carian sorcerer's sword for maximum style
- bleed or keen or something estoc because I love estoc (though I guess if I don't mind cheating a bit I can just mod the antspur to look like estoc, but that also makes it have the estoc's reach which it notably does not)
I will say, it's always disappointing to realize there's a gap between my enjoyment of thinking about ways to play through Elden Ring and actually doing so.
I've got about as much time in it as I do each of the Dark Souls (~1k hours), and I think as far as fighting stuff and going through the game to the finish, I've mostly derived more from any given hour of one of the others.
Which doesn't mean I'm putting it down for good any time soon, 'not as fun for me' isn't 'not fun for me'.

i'm using the regular rapier!
the big benefit to the main-gauche is your parry and the 130 crit modifier is at least arguably worth trading a little AR and reach
also it's like the only normal rapier with the complex hilt? what's that all about. anyway fashion

Did a little more exploring in Caelid. Got a new great staff, sorcery (the power of ROCK), and used those to barely eek out a win against Radahn. Started exploring Nokron, got this mimic tear I have heard oh so much about.
I also got one other new item while exploring Caelid.

the funny thing i didn't really expect with this build since getting the main-gauche is that it's become just fun enough to play for its own sake that it's becoming a temptation to drop all the challenge run sh*t i'm doing on the run and just play it regular

Wow I didn’t realize that scarlet rot from breath is stronger than weapons.
It feels like any boss with a hard second half phase that is vulnerable to rot can be made 20x easier by applying rot before the halfway marker. The rot itself seems like it does like 40% damage and usually you can get a good chunk in during whatever warmup they do to start phase 2. So pretty much of you can apply rot right before the half way mark you’ve won..
Just beat rellana this way

Rot from breath, Scarlet aeonia etc is 30% of the bosses health.
Definitely useful to have in your back pocket. Though for Rellana, she's a chump if you're using Wing Stance Milady - weak to pierce, and a ton of her attacks can be jumped

Yeah Ekzykes Decay has been a godsend for me in this DLC. So many enemies are weak to it and even some of the bosses can proc the nasty version of Rot on just a single breath, at most 2 for the most part. I think Midra has been the only boss so far that hasn't procc'd scarlet Rot off of Ekzykes after two breaths, and by then with my boosts I can pump out easily 5k+ Rot Damage just from the breath alone without even accounting for the proc.

Champion Victor down too! Only took a couple of attempts. Finished him off by roasting him alive with some thermite to the face.
Really, really digging that consumables are actually good in this game. It's a such a nice little thing after aeons of soulslikes where throwing daggers exist to keep the posture bar from reseting, now i can murder a crowd with a sharpened pipe or bean a boss with a shotput, or just set some f*cker's face on fire. Even the basic throwing gears are strong enough to be decent ranged damage and a useful tool i've always got on my bar.
Continuing to really enjoy the P-ogran too. I'm mostly specced for getting the most out of having exhausted my Phial, with a bit more into improving the stagger of my heavy attacks and making my perfect guards better at wrecking stuff (I'm unsure quite how good the latter is in boss fights, but hey, it's nice when a perfect parry immediately snaps someone's weapon out in the world)

I really, really enjoyed Lies of P, but I put it down after beating it once (with the Pipe Wrench Handle+Bonesaw for that ultragreatsword level of slowness and impact) because they'd already announced DLC and I wanted to wait before I properly burned through any of my other builds I was enjoying.
Supposedly we'll see that by the end of the year. I'll be very glad to get back into it.

Man it's funny how much every time i try to tinker with a different weapon, I keep coming back to Blasphemous Blade when things start getting rough. Between the heal on kill, the healing ash of war, the combined physical+fire damage from regular attacks, this sword is just too damn good. Every time I start using it again it immediately softens the blow of whatever I'm facing and lets me start progressing again. It's the ol' reliable of Elden Ring for sure.

Same. I have to deliberately force myself to use other weapons, or at least weapons that don't have a heal on kill/attack ash of war because gahtdamn, a Fully Upgraded Blas blade just helps so damn much it's unreal. Especially when your arcane/faith starts getting higher and the ash effect starts hitting harder and healing more.

guy at fromsoft: we should put in a talisman that directly buffs blasphemous blade. and also a physick tear that massively buffs damage at the expense of health drain, because surely there's no weapons that can just completely ignore that penalty
