Atkinson was born on May 1, 1917, to Raymond and Ellen (Hamilton) Atkinson in Brookings, South Dakota.
He was raised near Bonilla, South Dakota, where he attended Bonilla High School, graduating as valedictorian in 1935. He then attended Huron College where he was involved in football, basketball, track and boxing. On August 31, 1938, he was united in marriage to Sylvia Fodness in Nevada, lowa. Following their marriage, they moved to a farm near Kenneth, Minnesota where they lived and farmed their entire married life. In 1957.
Delbert attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, where he received a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education. He then began teaching middle school science and math in the Windom Public Schools in Windom, Minnesota, where he taught for 24 years. He continued farming during those years and stayed active in farming after retirement. On October 22, 1992, Sylvia preceded him in death. Delbert continued living on the farm until entering the Luverne Community Hospital on February 2 24, 2001.
On February 28, 2001, he was transferred to St. Mary's Hospital in Rochester, Minnesota, where he died on March 4, 2001, at the age of 83 years, 10 months and 4 days. He was a member of Grace Lutheran Church in Luverne. He was a member of Blue Mound Lutheran Church until it closed. There he was active as chairman of the call committee, superintendent of Sunday School and church treasurer.
He was a 4H-Club Advisor, member of Sons of Norway, life member of the National Education Association, Minnesota Association, Windom Education Association and National Science Teachers Association. Delbert loved reading, ballroom dancing, and working with tools. He is lovingly remembered by his two daughters, Yvonne (Heinz) Janning of Redwood Falls, MN and Vivien Wissink of Rochester, MN; six grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; two sisters, Dorothy Linette and Eleanor DeShazer, both of Huron. SD; and many nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his wife, Sylvia; parents and one brother, Clark.
