Travis is very good with computers and hopes to go to college to become a computer specialist. enjoys playing basketball in high school and would like to play in college, too. Travis has a tremendous amount of potential, with some very positive leadership skills. Medication and counseling have been beneficial in helping him with his feelings and conduct.

He appears to be happier now that he is able to express himself. Travis has adapted well to his new school, but his grades could be better if he worked at raising them. He has made tremendous progress in all areas of his life since moving into his current home with a strict, but loving, foster mom. Travis needs to continue counseling to help him through his feelings of loss and separation. Hanker completed a B.S. in Chemistry from St. Joseph's University. Early in the cold war, he worked for the Army Chemical Warfare Laboratories at Edgewood Arsenal in Aberdeen, Md. Dr.

Hanker then took a position in surgical research at Sinai Hospital in Baltimore. He earned his Ph.D. in Medicinal Chemistry from the University of Maryland. In 1969, Dr. Hanker joined the faculty at UNC-Chapel Hill Dental Research Center.

During his 30-year career, he pursued research and teaching as Professor of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, as well as Biomedical Engineering, retiring in 1999. Dr. Hanker had many scientific accomplishments including the development of histochemical stains for light and electron microscopy; the identification of the phi-body as an early marker for Acute Myeloid Leukemia; the discovery of a new type of lymphocyte he named the Medusa Cell; the invention of an artificial bone formula that allows growth of new, natural bone; and the demonstration of the transfer of gram negative bacteria in periodontal disease to internal organs. Dr. Hanker is survived by his wife of 52 years, Sonia Needle Hanker of Chapel Hill; sons and daughter-in-law, Edward and Patricia Hanker of Preston, Gary Hanker and Lawrence Hanker, both of Chapel Hill; granddaughter, Ariella Hanker; and sister, Florence of Philadelphia, Pa.

Dr. Hanker was predeceased by a sister, Shirley. A memorial service will be held today at 2 p.m. at UNC Hillel, 210 W. Cameron Avenue, Chapel Hill.

Interment was held Tuesday at Coastal Carolina State Veterans Cemetery in Jacksonville, N.C., with military honors. THORPE DURHAM Montrellous Devon Thorpe, affectionately known, as the son of Allison Elaine Thorpe and Richard Hayward Jones, died at his home on Saturday, May 15, 2004. Born and raised in Durham, N.C., Montrellous was educated in the Durham Public School System where he excelled in academics and sports. Montrellous continued to be an honor student at both Brogden Jr. High and Hillside High School where he graduated in 1997. After receiving a full academic scholarship from the Scholars Award, he continued his education at North Carolina Central University majoring in Criminal Justice.

He is survived by his parents, Allison Thorpe and Richard Jones; maternal grandparents, Elaine and Arthur Rush, John "Pete" and Paulette Thorpe; paternal ic Theater of Operations. After the war he worked for 34 years for the U.S. Navy at both the Norfolk Naval Shipyard and the Naval Air Station NAS retiring with the Civilian Meritorious Service Award. He was an active member and deacon of both Camellia and Conerstone Baptist Churches. A man of many words, Tom's passion was nature, loving his flowers and vegetable garden as well as the woods and water.

At his request there will be a private service and burial at Forrest Lawn Cemetery. The service will include military honors.
